History

December 1st, 1959 : 12 Nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, setting aside 10% of the earth, “forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes in the interest of mankind”. It was the first nuclear-arms agreement and the first institution to govern all human activities in an international region with no soverign jurisdiction. As a legacy to the 50th Anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, OUR SPACES initiated Antarctica Day in 2010 and doubled the nations involved from 14 to 28 the next year, with activities embraced by governmental and non-governmental organizations, involving schools, students and teachers alike.
